US sales tax calculator
Enter a price, pick a state, and see the sales tax and the total instantly. It also works backwards: enter a receipt total to find the pre-tax price, or check the actual rate a receipt charged.
Use this for a combined state + local rate, e.g. Los Angeles at 10.25%.
Alaska has no statewide sales tax, but many cities and boroughs charge a local sales tax. Enter your local rate as a custom rate.
How it works
Price → total: sales tax = price × rate, total = price + tax. Total → pre-tax price: pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate), tax = total − pre-tax price. Check a receipt rate: actual rate = total ÷ pre-tax price − 1. Use it to check whether a receipt charged the rate you expected.
What rate does it use?
The dropdown lists each state’s statewide base rate (Tax Foundation 2026 data, checked October 2026). Cities, counties, and special districts add local taxes on top, so your combined rate at the register is often higher. If you know your combined local rate, pick “Custom rate” and enter it.
