California sales tax calculator
California has the highest statewide base sales tax rate in the US at 7.25%. The calculator below is pre-filled for California — enter your price and see the tax and total at the base rate.
Use this for a combined state + local rate, e.g. Los Angeles at 10.25%.
Alaska has no statewide sales tax, but many cities and boroughs charge a local sales tax. Enter your local rate as a custom rate.
Base rate vs. your combined rate
California’s 7.25% is only the statewide base. Cities, counties, and special districts add district taxes on top, so the rate on your receipt depends on where the sale happens. In Los Angeles, the combined rate reaches 10.25%. That is why the calculator has a custom rate box: enter your combined local rate and the math follows it.
Worked example
At the state base rate
A $100 item at 7.25% adds $7.25 in tax, for a total of $107.25.
At the Los Angeles combined rate
The same $100 item at 10.25% adds $10.25 in tax, for a total of $110.25. The $3.00 difference is entirely local district tax.
Please note: these are statewide base rates only, checked October 2026 (Tax Foundation 2026). Local taxes vary by city and county, and some goods and services are exempt or taxed differently.
